When diverticula cause symptoms, such as pain It’s called diverticular disease.
If the diverticula become inflamed or infected, causing more severe symptoms, it’s called diverticulitis.
Symptoms of diverticular disease and diverticulitis (NICE 2022)
Diverticular disease
- left iliac fossa abdominal pain. It tends to come and go and gets worse during or shortly after eating (pooing or farting eases it)
- constipation, diarrhoea, or both
- occasionally, blood in the faeces
Diverticulitis
- Sudden constant, more severe abdominal pain
- fever
- diarrhoea or constipation
- mucus or blood in faeces or pr bleeding
