9.30am Barbara Czenki – swollen knee

Barbara is a 65-year-old woman who is an infrequent attender. Her reason for making this telephone appointment was to ask for advice regarding ibuprofen or glucosamine with chondroitin to help with pain in both her knees.

Her right knee is the most painful. She states that she has had knee pain on the right for a few years, but it has progressively gotten worse and in the last 6 months or so she has noticed similar pain on the left.

She describes an “aching” pain on the inside of the knees, occasional “grinding” and some mild swelling on the right. Her right knee is stiff most mornings and often feels stiff after prolonged sitting. Her pain is typically worse at the end of the day or when she is more active, particularly with line dancing, which she enjoys.

She is able to mobilise, but slowly.

She has a BMI of 31 kg/m2, and has hypertension, high cholesterol, CKD and mild COPD. She is currently employed as a domestic cleaner.

* don’t forget – being unable to take part in social activities may affect her mood

You decide to offer her a face to face appointment this afternoon to carry out an examination (record your work in the workbook provided).
