Planning and Medication

Travel can be stressful, particularly for travellers with chronic illnesses, such as epilepsy, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, mental health problems or arthritis. Advise that they see a nurse at least a month before they travel.

Some medicines taken for a Chronic Disease such as steroids, can weaken the immune system and make them more susceptible to travel-related infections.

Before they go

  • Find out if their health insurance covers medical care abroad – many plans don’t! Consider buying additional insurance which covers health care and emergency evacuation
  • Carry a card with information about their condition, including any drug or food allergies, written in the local language
  • If appropriate, wear a medical alert bracelet or other medical jewellery with this information on it
