What is accountability and competence?

We often get asked “will I be competent to see children for minor illness following this course?. The question is how do we measure accountability and competence?

We will explore using one of Priscilla’s previous cases.

There are 3 principles of accountability defined by the RCN. These are

  1. Underlying ethical principles related to decision making.
  2. Identifying your own professional clinical needs.
  3. Apply an understanding of legal aspects related to your practice.
  4. Demonstrate a professional approach to documentation (written and electronic) in the context of your clinical practice.

These relate nicely to the six dimensions of Quality Standards in healthcare (2001, IOE) which will be used in our next case. In the next topic.

  1. Safe
  2. Effective
  3. patient-centred
  4. timely
  5. Efficient
  6. Equitable
